Baby's "homecoming outfit" is done!

I finished the set! I am seriously in love with this little outfit. It is so soft and sweet. I can't wait to pack it into my hospital bag!

The toggles look intimidating to make, but they were actually really easy. You just make an i-cord, knot it, and then sew the end of the knot onto the knot itself. You pull the i-cord through a few stitches and voila! An adorable alternative to buttons.

Below is a picture I took of the sweater (before it was totally done) with my 1st blue sweater so you could see the size difference. The cream sweater should fit a 0-3 month old, and the blue sweater is for a 6-9 month old.

  3. Oh my goodness--you are seriously amazing!! The toggles are so cute and really make the sweater. I forgot to mention to you on the phone today that my friend, Jenn, asked me to teach her how to knit! I'm hoping that she'll love it as much as I did and that I'll be able to teach her almost as well as you taught me! :)

  4. ps what kind of yarn did you use? did I tell you I recently bought ALL THREE of the itty bitty books online for a cheap price on amazon? heaven!

pps did you have a hard time meeting the gauge requirements? Gauge is my least favorite part of knitting, by far. I'd rather sew in ends than work on a gauge swatch. It just never really works out for me, even when I swatch and think it looks right, it never comes out right :-( Teach me, Kelly!

  5. Erica--I used Blue Sky Alpaca organic cotton. It's really soft! I didn't think gauge was too important for the sweaters I've made--if they came out too big, they could always fit the baby later. I just picked a yarn that had the same # of stitches per inch on the label as the yarn the pattern called for (I think it was 5 stitches per inch).

I have a hard time with gauge on hats...I usually just knit a one inch swatch, measure how many stitches I'm getting per inch, and then multiply by the circumference of the person's head. I take that number and subtract 2 inches for stretchines...wow, I am a math whiz!! Who knew? ;)

  6. But clearly not a grammar whiz, Becky...(should say "stretchiness" above). Let me know how it goes teaching your friend to knit!

  7. Oh man, I wish "The Correctress" would have caught the error before you corrected yourself! :)

  8. I am laughing out loud at you people!! Always striving for perfection! I think they must teach that at Notre Dame. Just remember not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good! (Voltaire)
