Roar! (A Dinosaur Hat)

I finished the Dinosaur Hat last night and tried it on Drew this morning.  He is not quite the willing hat model that he used to be.  He kept trying to yank it off his head.  Hope he will keep it on once the cold weather comes!  My camera was out of battery so I had to take these with my phone.

I wasn't looking forward to sewing on the spikes in a straight line, but it wasn't too bad.  I sewed each spike closed first.  Then, starting with the spike closest to the ribbed cuff, I picked a vertical row of stitches and started sewing the spikes on, making sure that I always stitched back down into the same vertical row.  

Now I need to decide if I should make the matching mittens.  I think Drew might be distracted by the spikes and try to pull them off.  Maybe I should just make green mittens with blue cuffs, sans spikes. What do you think?

Next on the Needles...

I just finished 3 more burp cloths.  These ones are for Emma's baby boy, due in a few weeks.

I'm feeling much more comfortable using my machine now.  I did a zig zag edge in lime green thread with white thread in the bobbin.

I have knitting ADD right now.  I want to start so many different projects!  I just look at all of them, and then look at my yarn, and can't decide what to start!  Here are some of the projects in my queue:

Fair Isle Mittens for Me (I just bought this pattern--they are SO gorgeous!  Still need to buy yarn)
Some sort of top down sweater for me

Sewing with Mom

My mom and dad were in town this past week.  My mom and I worked on several sewing projects together!  After it took me 2 hours of studying the manual to figure out how to thread my new machine on my own, it was so nice to have my mom there to show me some techniques from using my rotary cutter to pivoting fabric with the needle down on my machine.  We had fun and I learned a lot!  I'm much more comfortable using my machine now.  Thanks, Mom!

Here are some pictures of what we made:

We made 2 bibs for Drew out of fingertip towels.  The other bibs I was using were TINY on him and barely covered his whole shirt.  We bought these fingertip towels for $2-3 at Home Goods.  We cut out the neckline and zig zag stitched around it.  We wrote out the letters for Drew's name (backwards) and stuck Wonder Under adhesive paper to it.  Then we cut out the letters and ironed them onto the towel.  Finally I zig zag stitched around each letter.  My sewing machine will make a buttonhole and sew the button on.  Pretty cool!

The Boo bib was a Halloween towel that already had a ghost stitched on it.  I wrote BOO! on the bib and then zig zag stitched on top of the letters.  Luckily Halloween stuff with wiggly letters is considered scary in a good way!

We also made a pin cushion and bag that I can use to toss pieces of thread or fabric that I snip while sewing.  My mom has one of these on her sewing table and when I started sewing I knew I wanted one, too!  The fabric we used is really cute--it has sewing machines, embroidery hoops, knitting needles and yarn on it--all of my favorite crafty supplies!
